Interested in Joining The Leonard Effect Partner Network? Here Is How It Works

Independent hockey media is at its best when passionate people have the opportunity to work together instead of trying to compete for the same small piece of attention.

That idea is at the heart of the The Leonard Effect Partner Network and the developing Hockey Media Alliance.

The goal is simple.

Create a professional network where independent hockey websites, writers, podcasters, page owners, photographers, and creators can connect, collaborate, share audiences, and help one another grow.

If you operate an independent hockey platform and you are interested in becoming involved, we have created a dedicated Partner Network page explaining what we are building and how to get started.

What Is the Hockey Media Alliance?

The Hockey Media Alliance is being developed as a network for independent hockey media.

There are already major national organizations covering the NHL. There are also large established publications covering individual teams.

The Alliance is not designed to compete with those organizations.

It is designed to give smaller independent creators something that can be much harder to build alone.

A network.

A Capitals publication may understand Washington better than anyone outside the market.

A Penguins publication may understand Pittsburgh.

A Bruins creator may understand Boston.

A Sabres writer may understand Buffalo.

When those teams meet, the people covering them should be able to communicate with one another, exchange knowledge, introduce their audiences to another perspective, and create something more interesting than simply repeating information that fans can already find everywhere else.

Collaboration Between Team Communities

One of the central ideas behind the Hockey Media Alliance is collaboration surrounding NHL matchups.

Imagine Washington is preparing to play Pittsburgh.

A Capitals creator could give Pittsburgh fans an update on Washington.

Who is playing well?

Who is struggling?

What storylines should opposing fans know about?

What records or milestones are approaching?

What should Pittsburgh fans watch during the game?

The Pittsburgh representative can then do the same for Capitals fans.

That conversation can become an article, an audio discussion, a podcast segment, a social media collaboration, or another piece of content both publications can share with their audiences.

It gives fans information from someone who actually follows the opposing team every day.

It also introduces both publications to new hockey audiences.

A Network Without Giving Up Your Independence

Joining the Partner Network does not mean giving up your identity.

Your website remains your website.

Your audience remains your audience.

Your editorial decisions remain your decisions.

Your sponsors remain your sponsors.

The purpose of the Alliance is to create opportunities that would be difficult for smaller publications to create individually.

Members can collaborate when it makes sense while continuing to build their own brands.

The Discord Community

An important part of the Hockey Media Alliance will be a private Discord community for participating members.

Think of it as a virtual hockey media room.

Members will be able to communicate with other independent creators throughout the league, find someone covering an upcoming opponent, coordinate collaborations, discuss story ideas, share useful information, ask questions, and build professional relationships.

Instead of searching the internet every time your team plays someone new, the goal is eventually to have someone inside the network who already knows that team and its community.

The Discord is also intended to create something independent creators often do not have.

Colleagues.

Running an independent publication can be surprisingly isolated.

The Hockey Media Alliance is meant to change that.

Cross Promotion

Members will also have opportunities to promote one another.

Participating publications will be represented through network pages that allow readers to discover independent coverage of other NHL teams.

A Capitals fan looking for information about Boston could discover the Alliance member covering the Bruins.

A Bruins fan preparing for a Washington matchup could discover The Leonard Effect.

Over time, that creates a web of independent hockey publications sending readers to one another instead of relying entirely on search engines and social media algorithms to determine who gets discovered.

Professional Standards Matter

This network is intended to be fun, but it is also intended to be professional.

Hockey fans are passionate.

That is part of what makes the sport special.

But rivalries cannot prevent collaboration.

Members will be expected to treat one another respectfully, communicate professionally, honor agreements, and remember that the person covering the opposing team is a colleague even when the teams themselves are bitter rivals.

There is plenty of room for predictions, friendly trash talk, disagreements, and rivalry.

There is not room for personal hostility.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are especially interested in independent creators who are still building.

You do not need to be the largest publication covering your team.

You do not need an enormous social media following.

You do not need a major media company behind you.

We are looking for people who consistently create hockey content, care about the community they serve, maintain an active presence, and want to build something alongside other independent creators.

That could include written hockey websites, team specific publications, podcasts, social media pages, photographers, and other hockey creators.

Quality, consistency, professionalism, and passion matter much more than being the biggest name in the room.

The Leonard Effect Is Building Too

The Leonard Effect is also a new independent publication.

We are not pretending to be an established national media company.

We are building this alongside everyone else.

That is actually one of the reasons the Partner Network exists.

Instead of asking how one independent hockey site can become bigger than every other independent hockey site, we would rather ask a different question.

What could independent hockey media become if we helped one another grow?

That is the experiment.

The Hockey Media Alliance is still being built.

That means the people who join early will have an opportunity not simply to participate in the network, but to help shape what it eventually becomes.

There are 32 NHL teams.

There are millions of hockey fans.

And there are independent creators throughout the hockey world doing incredible work largely on their own.

Maybe we do not have to do it alone.

After 8 comes 9....
